The "TORNADO" Transformation: One Homeowner's ECO4 Success Story Before the March 2026 Deadline
Feltwell, Norfolk | November 2025 Installation
Complete System: 9kW Panasonic Air Source Heat Pump + New Radiators + Panasonic Controller + 3.60kW Solar PV
The Driving Forces: Savings, Solar, and a Fossil-Fuel Free Future
*Please note that the ECO4 scheme is coming to a close on 31st March 2026. The experience and project mentioned in this case study, may no longer be available in the same capacity.
For this Norfolk homeowner, the decision to pursue energy efficiency upgrades under the ECO4 scheme was centred around financial savings and future-proofing their property. Specifically, they were keen to install solar panels with the enticing prospect of generating "free energy," immediately reducing reliance on the grid and cutting household running costs.
Equally important was the strategic move to an Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP), phasing out their reliance on fossil fuels. These drivers—securing free energy now, turning to a greener form of heating and being able to do it all for free, made the project a no-brainer.
Key Points:
1. EPC uplift from 57D to 82B.
2. Installation of ASHP and Solar PV dramatically reducing reliance on high-cost grid electricity and achieving the homeowner’s initial motivation of securing "free energy" for their daily electrical needs.
Core Upgrade: 9kW Panasonic Aquarea ASHP
Following the initial assessment, this property was deemed to have sufficient insulation, meaning the next step was to replace the outdated oil system. The core of the upgrade was the installation of a high-efficiency 9kW Panasonic Aquarea ASHP, providing a robust, future-proof, low-carbon heating solution designed to perform optimally even at outdoor temperatures as low as -20℃.
One of our experienced Senior Heating Engineers designed a comprehensive and tailored system, identifying that new radiators were required throughout the home to meet the specific heat demand of each room. These were fitted with TRVs and integrated with a central Panasonic Controller, giving the homeowner granular control over their environment.
The transformation was immediately apparent: the homeowner reported that the new ASHP runs with "less noise than expected," while the system delivered a surprising side benefit, making their "water pressure... amazing and better than before," underscoring the immediate upgrade to comfort and their daily lives.
Solar Installation: 3.60kW Solar PV System
This comprehensive and tailored retrofit was completed with the installation of a 3.60kW Solar PV system, delivering the final, crucial component for the home's transition to energy independence. This system utilises high-efficiency Trina Solar 450W panels—modules known for their exceptional durability and industry-leading performance warranties. Powering the system is a Solax X1-Boost-G4 inverter, a smart unit designed for seamless integration and remote monitoring.
The true power of this project lies in the synergy between the Solar PV and the ASHP. By generating free, clean electricity, the homeowner is able to directly offset a substantial portion of the power required to run the 9kW Panasonic heat pump during daylight hours. This coupling of clean generation and low-carbon heating maximises the benefit of both installations, dramatically reducing reliance on high-cost grid electricity and achieving the homeowner’s initial motivation of securing "free energy" for their daily electrical needs.
Speedy Efficiency
The successful technical delivery was matched by an installation process defined by speed and efficiency, earning the project its unique nickname: “tornado". Praised as being "busy and fast” with the customer noting that we were “in and out", the entire job was completed swiftly and professionally in just ONE week.
The customer specifically commended our in-house installers and electricians for being "quick and accommodating," even helping with practical tasks like "moving furniture"—a level of service that left the customer "unable to fault" our team.
Tornado Transformation Results
The result of the "TORNADO" Transformation is a home that is now fully future-proofed, energy-independent, and significantly more valuable.
The true success of this comprehensive ECO4 retrofit is best quantified by the Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) uplift. Prior to the works, the property sat at a rating of 57 (Band D). Following the combined installation of the ASHP and the Solar PV system, the home achieved a phenomenal rating of 82 (Band B).
This leap represents more than just reduced bills; it signifies a home that is vastly more comfortable, with greatly improved thermal retention and a near-zero carbon heating source powered by self-generated electricity.
This project stands as a powerful testament to how the ECO4 scheme delivered immediate, high-satisfaction outcomes while simultaneously meeting the long-term national goal of transitioning UK homes toward a clean, low-carbon future, well ahead of the March 2026 deadline.
