Smart Export Guarantee
The smart export guarantee (SEG) was launched in January 2020. It’s a mechanism of paying homeowners for the renewable energy they generate which is exported to the grid. The scheme replaced the previous “feed in tariff” scheme which largely ended in 2015/16 when rates were slashed to negligible amounts however fully ended in 2019. The smart export guarantee is mostly applicable to solar panel systems which generate a surplus of electricity over what is needed within the property. The electricity exported to the grid needs to be metered which is mostly commonly done via a “smart meter” installed by your energy provider. The SEG rates paid vary from supplier to supplier and is often most beneficial when choosing and suitable import tariff with your chosen energy supplier.
